The W & P Glass Negative Collection
N F S group outside Lydd Coastal Stores c1942. David Pleasants I am afraid you are wrong Dave Beck, That is a war time picture of what is now "The Old Post Office" in Battery Road. The bungalow to the left is "Windways", unrecognisable now as it has been completely rebuilt. That is where I spent the first nineteen years of my life. The chimney in that picture lasted from 1937 to 1987 when it came down in the hurricane. Both buildings were used during the War by the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS). If you go on to Google Earth pick up the clock at the top and slide it back to 1940 you will see the fire station beside the bungalow on the left In the present day (2013) picture the concrete base looks like a piece of crazy paving, all along the sides of that are broken edges where the building was removed. It has been like that for as long as I can remember! Further West is a smaller building that was another AFS building. That concrete base is also still there but the building was clearly of lighter construction as there is nothing left of the building. As kids we used that piece of concrete as a tennis court!! John Denny it was my father who provided you with groceries. Often people phoned or wrote and put in an order to be delivered on the day of their arrival. I would often go with him as a 4 year old. He had a 1947 Volkswagen Beatle that he brought back from Germany. By then he had hand painted it with red Valspar. Registration No. LKK 148! It is so clear in my mind, I wish I could remember what happened yesterday!! The building opposite is "Stanmore" which was occupied by Fred Tart and his sister Madge after they gave up The Pilot , the old version that is, not the one on the corner now. I remember that being built in about 1960. Via Facebook See more on our website @ https://www.warandpeace.uk.com
