An RAF Stirling bomber returning from a raid on Genoa ran out of fuel and crashed into Rye Street Farm Cliffe on Saturday October 24th 1942. . All the crew were killed and Lilian McPherson in the farmhouse was injured. She was taken to Cooling Castle ARP station where she died of her injuries.
